The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) marked this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) with a significant milestone—the re-launch of the Women Leaders Network. This initiative, originally established in 2013, aims to create an enabling environment for women in the UN system in Kenya to thrive, grow professionally, and advocate for gender equality within the organization. The event, held on March 18th, provided a platform for women leaders to connect, share experiences, and discuss strategies for achieving gender parity.
UNON Director General, Madam Zainab Hawa Bangura, set the tone for the celebrations with a strong message: “Gender equality is not an aspiration but an imperative for an inclusive and prosperous world. And as women, we cannot do it alone—we need the valiant, intentional, and active support of the men in our communities.”
The Women Leaders Network, reintroduced by Ms. Bangura, in December 2020, has been instrumental in fostering a culture of mentorship and support for female staff. Currently, the UN Country Team leadership in Kenya boasts approximately 51% women, with UNON and its host agencies, UNEP and UN-Habitat, all led by women. Building on this foundation, the network seeks to further its impact by equipping women with tools and opportunities to advance their careers while ensuring the involvement of male allies as demonstrated by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guiterres on his policy on gender parity.
Empowering Women for an Inclusive Future
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, “For All Women and Girls; Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” underscores the need for concrete actions that unlock equal rights, power, and opportunities for all. With a special focus on young women as catalysts for lasting change, the Women Leaders Network event reinforced the importance of mentorship, leadership development, and knowledge exchange in achieving gender equity.
Key topics addressed included work-life balance, career advancement and positioning, and tackling workplace harassment. In addition to networking, the event provided a platform for members to explore opportunities within the UN system that support gender equality and work-life balance.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening the Women Leaders Network
As the event concluded, participants expressed their commitment to actively contributing to the Women Leaders Network’s objectives. Key takeaways included the need for sustained mentorship, increased visibility for women leaders, and continued engagement in policy advocacy. The re-launch of the Women Leaders Network signals a renewed effort to ensure that women at all levels of the UN system have the support and resources needed to excel.
The Women Leaders Network will continue to be a driving force in creating a workplace where women not only participate but thrive, shaping a future where gender equality is not just an aspiration but a reality.
