United Nations Office at Nairobi response to the COVID-19 outbreak

The United Nations is proud to stand with the people of Kenya in their fight against the global COVID-19 pandemic.

We recognise that this is a shared challenge, and one will can only overcome by joining together to act quickly, decisively and with a spirit of whole-hearted cooperation.

In the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, “We need to do everything possible to find the peace and unity our world so desperately needs to battle COVID-19. We must mobilize every ounce of energy to defeat it.”

In this spirit, United Nations Agencies in Kenya are giving their full support to the Government of Kenya in this fight, including through joint efforts to redeploy existing resources and mobilise additional funding to support the national COVID-19 response, as well as through the direct action of UN experts embedded within the Ministry of Health and other government agencies.

At the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON), we are doing our utmost to ensure the health, safety and security of our over 3,000 staff, their families and communities. In line with this commitment, we have put in place quarantine measures for United Nations staff returning to Kenya from overseas and equipped the UN Joint Medical Service in Nairobi with full resources required to provide 24/7 medical and psychological support for staff and their families.

In order to limit the risk of transmission, we have suspended operations at our Gigiri Complex in Nairobi until further notice. However, while our offices are closed, all UN Agencies remain steadfast in our mission to deliver for the people we serve, both in Kenya and beyond, and our staff remain on duty and more active than ever – albeit from different locations, using different technologies.  We remain, as always, at your service. We know that together, we can overcome the COVID-19 challenge in Kenya and around the world.
